United States of Trump

As I look across the pond and watch a Greek tragedy playing out in front of my eyes, a country that was the first to cast aside the yoke of British colonialism, I wonder about the future of this great experiment in democracy.

The President is a narcissist at his core, and as a trainee authoritarian, looks up to Putin and Ji. Putin, whose role model is Stalin, and Ji, who sees himself as Confucius or, as Plato would call, a philosopher King. On the other hand, Donald has inadvertently modelled himself on Caligula and Nero. One made his horse a senator, and the other fiddled while Rome burned. To elaborate on the horse analogy, this would include the likes of  Hegseth, Burgum, Duffy, Kennedy, Miller, Carr, and Noem.

Trump is now going after incumbent Republicans who do not kiss his “ring,” challenging them by putting up subservient MAGA Republicans against them in House and Senate primaries. Massie is out because of Epstein at a cost of $32 million. He was one of several ousted by Trump acolytes, including the now former Senator Bill Cassidy, who voted with Democrats to impeach Trump over the January 6th insurrection. In addition, the weaponisation of closed primaries by Trump Republicans excludes independent voters, even in districts where well over 50% of registered voters are independent. This clearly undermines the democratic legitimacy of the election process by imposing a candidate on the electorate.

The President’s authoritarian instinct has been further boosted by his politically appointed cronies on the Supreme Court. They have overturned the Voting Rights Act passed by LBJ. This decision has allowed gerrymandering and redistricting on a grand scale, again undermining democracy to ensure he holds on to the House and Senate in the November midterms. Some would say the Supreme Court decision has the whiff of Jim Crow about it. A 2024 Supreme Court decision grants presidents immunity from prosecution for criminal acts committed while in office. This gives Trump a free pass for his past crimes but sets a dangerous precedent for all future presidents. Supporters of Trump need to ask themselves, what exactly was the Boston Tea Party for and was Paul’s ride a waste of time?

He unashamedly is making billions while in office, largely on the back of crypto scams, expanding the family business into the Middle East, selling Bibles, and blatant insider trading. Trump is a grifter and makes Madoff look like a measly pickpocket. Reuters reported that between June 2024 and June 2025, Trump Corp’s income rose from $51 million to $824 million. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has also granted Trump a settlement that bars the IRS from investigating Trump and his family for past tax issues. He has made political appointments not based on competence, knowledge, or ability, but on political contributions. There are too many to list, but here are a few:

  1. Linda McMahon gave $20.3 million to the pro-Trump super PAC Make America Great Again, and between Nov 2023 and Sept 2024 gave an additional $930,000 to the Trump 47 Committee: Appointed Secretary of Education
  2. Trump announced his intent to nominate billionaire and Elon Musk ally Isaacman as NASA administrator in Dec 2024, just one week after Isaacman made a $2 million donation to Trump’s inaugural fund.
  3. Kelly Loeffler gave $2.5 million to MAGA Inc and millions to Trump Super PACs. Political Contributions: Appointed Administrator of the Small Business Administration
  4. Howard Lutnick gave $11 million to the pro-Trump super PAC Make America Great Again. : Appointed Secretary of Commerce
  5. Charles Kushner. In 2004, Kushner pleaded guilty to 16 federal counts of tax evasion. Trump pardoned Kushner at the end of his first term: Appointed Ambassador to France and Monaco
  6. Amazon licensing Deal and Inaugural Fund Donations giving Jeff Bezos access and policy Influence. Amazon got federal contracts following Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s dinner with Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Bezos also agreed to pay $40 million to license a documentary and limited series about First Lady Melania Trump, on which she was executive producer.
  7.  GEO Group, a company that constructs and operates private prison facilities, has been a long-time supporter of Trump and contributed in excess of $3.0 million to MAGA Inc. Political Contributions and Inaugural Fund Donations: ICE Contracts, which saw the murder of Alex Pretti and Reene Good

The above does not include Witkoff and Kushner Jr travelling the world looking for development opportunities masquerading as peace laureates. Do you remember the Gaza Riviera? You will find an exceedingly long list and further details on: https://campaignlegal.org/document/tracking-trump-administrations-most-corrupt-transactions#:~:text=Tracking%20the%20Trump%20Administration’s%20Most, Date.

Trump does all this openly and unashamedly under the noses of his MAGA supporters, who either do not care, watch too much Fox Not News, or have seriously flawed frontal lobes. I know I criticised Hilary for using the term “the deplorables,” but I am not running for president of the United States

His other big fan club are white Christian Nationalists, who have called him the Messiah and compared him to Jesus. In a poll carried out by the Public Religion Research Institute, a substantial number of Christian Nationalists believe that God ordained Donald Trump. These people are zealots and, like zealots, would be comfortable in  The Handmaid’s Tale new Gilead.

He has ballooned the US debt to nearly $40 trillion but wants to set aside a £1.8 billion compensation fund for friends and allies, including the former head of the Proud Boys. He is now asking for taxpayers to fund his vanity project, a ballroom, to the tune of $1.0 billion. This is the ballroom, which was going to be funded by acolytes and those like Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg, whose heads are so far up the president’s posterior that they cannot see daylight. Evidence of this is a comment made by Bezos in the last few days, “ I think he(Donald)is a more mature and disciplined version of himself than he was in his first term.”

CBS’s cowardly top team have capitulated to Trump by cancelling Stephen Colbert’s Late Show. CBS is owned by Skydance, which is run by David Ellison, the son of Larry and seems on its way to becoming the equivalent of the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company. Add this to Newsmax and One America News Network, and alternative facts become the new norm.

He has re-enacted his own Bay of Pigs in that he has been screwed over by a bunch of murdering zealots in Iran, all done without congressional approval or consultation with his allies. He has stopped supporting Ukraine and is holding up arms sales to Taiwan. He has undermined the NATO alliance and his allies in Europe, threatened to annex Greenland, lost the tariff war with China and condemned millions in the southern hemisphere to death by shutting down USAID. He supported the Reich’s destruction and genocide in Gaza, supports the annexation of the West Bank, and, without a clear road map for self-governing, sustainable and democratic Palestine, he wants all Arab States to sign up to the Abraham Accords. While we in Europe have been punched drunk by Trump’s foreign policy seizures, the Chinese President is laughing from behind his fan.

If you believe that democracies are about the battle of ideas, this is clearly not the case in the US. In the US, it is a battle between the Super PACs, in effect, a plutocracy, a system of government where the wealthiest individuals hold ultimate power and control. America’s democratic demise can also be seen in the three independent branches of government,  all of which seem to be suffering from Ash Dieback.

I could go on and on, but I will finish with a quote from Benjamin Franklin. Just in case some of my American brothers and sisters do not know who he is, he is one of the founding fathers. He described the new republic and democracy as fragile, saying “republic, if you can keep it.” The question today to the average US voter is: Do you want to keep it?
