Iran: The Tyranny of Theology

The Iranian people have been under the iron fist of religious tyranny since 1979, replacing the autocratic rule of the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who in 1953 replaced a democratically elected  Prime Minister,Mohammad Mosaddegh, in a coup that was supported by the CIA and MI6. Mosaddegh’s political sin was that he, with the full support of the Iranian people, was going to nationalise the Iranian oil industry, then owned by Anglo-Iranian Oil, now known as BP. The young, politically naive  Shah was not unlike Louis the 16th, politically naive and insecure. However, unlike Louis the 16th, who was executed as a result of the French Revolution, the Shah, after his downfall, fled with his family to the  US.

With the support of the UK and the US, the Shah ushered in two decades of autocratic rule, which resulted in his overthrow in 1979, led by Ayatollah Khomeini. Khomeini, in a Machiavellian manner, with the support of a cross-section of the Iranian people, replaced an autocratic regime with the imposition of a theocracy based on the brutal implementation of Islamic and Sharia law, and where the Hajib became the de facto symbol of the oppressive and misogynistic regime. This brutality is now being played out in front of our eyes today, with thousands of protestors reportedly killed by the regime. This was the case after the murder of Mahsa Amini in 2022. Then, subsequent unrest and protests by young men and women chanting “Women, Life and Freedom were brutally put down by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), killing six hundred brave Iranians. Later, after mock trials each lasting a couple of hours, many were sentenced to death and executed by the Mullahs. click below

Iran has been under sanctions for decades, and the toll is being felt by ordinary Iranian individuals, with a currency that has virtually no value, on top of the ongoing oppression by an illegitimate government underpinned by a corrupt and ideologically driven IGRC. The IGRC also control large swathes of the Iranian economy, from oil, agriculture, to construction. While killing their own citizens, they send their children without fear to private schools across the Western world. Mohammad Pakpour, who heads the IGRC, has more in common with Michael Corleone than Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

Here, Starmer has failed to proscribe the IGRC as a terrorist group, which is sort of consistent with his inability to call out what is happening in Gaza as genocide. This is because his concerns are about, ” diplomatic engagement with the theocracy.” Pressure is on Starmer to proscribe IGRC as a terrorist group; better late than never. The UK and all European countries need to break all diplomatic relations with the closing of all Iranian embassies and the expelling all of  so-called Iranian diplomats. In addition, all European countries should close their embassies in Iran. This is not political showboating but further isolating the Iranian regime and giving the millions of Iranians fighting for democracy a chance for change. I know what Keir will say, we need channels of communication, there are plenty of channels which include back channels and the UN, if you need to talk.

Donald, through his incoherent utterances, has given Iranians who are putting their lives on the line hope of some sort of Western intervention in support of the uprising. I hope this is not a management change like Venezuela but rather support that allows the removal of a tyrannical theocracy and sees the start of a journey towards democracy. One proviso is that this may be difficult for the Sunni autocracies in the region to cheer about. Iran has given the world so much, from algebra and astronomy to algorithms and Omar Khayyam. I know Mossad’s and the CIA’s fingers will be all over this, and exploiting and creating unrest is their raison d’etre. Generally, this does not turn out well, as in the case of the overthrow of Mosaddegh, the overthrow of the democratically elected Salvador Allende in Chile through support for a coup led by General Pinochet, and support for the brutal dictators Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, but on this issue in front of us, the CIA and Mossad are not exactly the problem.

The time to topple this theocracy is now; do not procrastinate.
