The assassination attempt on the 45th President’s life is a symptom of the political dysfunction in the world’s most important democracy. A democracy that takes great pride in upholding the Second Amendment and sheds crocodile tears when children are killed in mass shootings. A democracy that has politicised the judiciary, where a woman’s right to choose has been undermined, where a president can now act with impunity, has allowed money as opposed to values to take over the political system and where social cohesion is on the brink. Does this look like “The American Dream” or Reagan’s, “Shining City on a Hill”?
The assassination attempt on former President Trump will embolden those on the nutty Christian Right who already believe he has been sent by their imaginary friend in the sky. This means that a 1 to 2% shift in the polls towards Trump will guarantee him the Presidency, and the war for the highest office in the land, is done. Joe Biden and his advisors, including his wife and sister, should be ashamed of themselves because they refused to see the writing on the wall and advise Joe accordingly. People describe America as a political experiment, George Washington one of the founding fathers said” The establishment of our new government seemed to be the last great experiment for, human happiness” though that excluded slaves. The consequences for the free world could be enormous, starting with America’s commitment to the NATO Alliance, reining back on its support for Ukraine, letting Netanyahu run amuck even more and seeing the Middle East erupt. A Trump presidency will see America become more inward-facing both politically and economically which will embolden Iran, China and Russia, undermining the so-called rules-based system. We in Europe need to prepare for these possible shocks at a time when Europe is also “turning right.” Finally, the current political polarisation in America feels like the start of a new civil war, and the only solution may be, funny enough, a” Two-State Solution.”
