I returned to Belfast after my family’s visit to Berlin and even after years of studying the Second World War, watching documentaries on the Holocaust and reading books on Nazi Germany the sheer inhumanity and the causal efficiency of the extermination of Jews and the murder of Roma, homosexuals and those with disabilities, left me to think about our evolution. Then I came back to hear Victor Orban uttering Nazi rhetoric, that Europeans, meaning white people should not procreate with non-Europeans which he described as “race mixing.” He has been widely criticised by many anti-racist and antisemitic organisations and politicians worldwide including the US Envoy to combat antisemitism.
I found his statement particularly abhorrent because my children are of mixed race. This was exacerbated by his statements linked to Hitler’s Aryan race ideas and to the pseudo-science of eugenics. He is described as a man who governs an illiberal democracy which is the polite way to describe an authoritarian. Under the nose of the Eu, Orban has undermined the free press, the independent judiciary, basic human rights and values that underpin the Eu. This has all happened with little or no sanction from Eu institutions, as Hungary continues to benefit from billions of Eu support. The Eu gets “principled” with a fellow democracy about a goddam protocol but fails to deter Orban’s behaviour which undermines its founding principles. Orban thrives on controversy, anti-immigration, anti-LBGT, and anti-elite, anti-Eu, has even embraced the” Great Replacement” conspiracy theory and to top it all is playing footsy with Putin. Orban’s mealy-mouthed clarification that he was referring to cultures and not race is the same difference between 30 cm and one foot, there isn’t one.
He now has become CPAC’s (Conservative Political Action Committee) new golden boy and is being promoted on US right-wing media outlets such as Fox. CPAC is a cabal of far-right nutcases that now are increasingly the new face of the Republican party and community. Another link to our friends across the pond is that like Trump, he has built an unholy alliance with evangelical Christians and conservative Catholics.
The question for the Eu is, do you really want him part of the Eu family, if you still do, it is time to forget the carrot and get out the big stick.
