Boris and his Tory Government again hit a new low with the introduction of a plan to resettle asylum seekers who arrive in the UK on boats from France to Rwanda. This plan has been described as cruel, absolutely chilling, inhumane and the UN said it broke international conventions. The Archbishop of Canterbury added a theist dimension, saying that the policy did not stand “the judgement of God.” The proposal was fast tracked under a rarely used “ministerial direction,” against the advice and misgivings of Home Office officials.
Why now you may ask? Well, it plays to Boris’s old white middle class right of the Tory party, a section of the newly captured Brexit voting former red wall seats, gives the illusion of taking back control and it also distracts from further “party gate” revelations. This a prime minister whose morals and principles are indistinguishable from a cesspool and a premiership saved not by the bell but by a brutal war.
Home Secretary Priti Patel’s Ugandan /Indian parents were granted permission to settle in the UK back in the sixties but if her current plan existed back then, they would have ended up in Rwanda. She is an admirer of India’s Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Modi, disturbing to say the least. In addition, as Secretary of State for International Development she failed to resign after breaking the ministerial code over private meetings with Israeli officials without clearance from the Foreign Office. Do you see a pattern?
No doubt there is a need to deal with people smuggling networks, but this must be tackled by working jointly with our former EU partners. Though this may be a bit of an ask now, as Macron tries to fight off Le Pen and Scholz is trying to keep the lights on in Germany while sanctioning Russia and Putin is prosecuting a war for what reason, who the hell knows.
Migration will continue to be a growing challenge for developed economies whether from South America to North America or from Africa to Europe. This will only get worse over the coming decades as a direct consequence of climate change. This will result in displacement and migration of millions because of conflicts over food, water and just survival. Shipping people around the world as a solution to migration could be described as, a 360-degree solution, in other words not a solution.
The 1980’s Brandt Commission Report chaired by former German Chancellor Willy Brandt remains the unfulfilled foundational report to deal with global issues from, development, poverty, energy, food security, education, women, health, trade, industrialisation and development finance.
I will finish with a quote from the report: “Whatever their differences and however profound, there is a mutuality of interest between North and South. The fate of both is immediately connected. The search for solutions is not an act of benevolence but a condition of mutual
survival”.
